New shipping routes in Kattegat and Skagerrak

On July 1, 2020, new shipping routes will be established in Kattegat and Skagerrak. The routes will increase the safety of navigation for the 70,000 ships that pass through the waters annually.

The current Kattegat shipping route, Route T, was established over 40 years ago. Today, ships are built much larger, and approximately 70,000 ships sail through Kattegat annually, including many deep-draught tankers sailing to and from the Baltic Sea.

The new shipping routes are established to create more predictable traffic patterns and to guide the ships on routes that separate oncoming ship traffic better, thus increasing the safety of navigation. On some sections, so-called traffic separation schemes are introduced, which will simplify sailing and help prevent ship collisions.
 

The new shipping routes will be established on July 1, 2020. For official and detailed information we refer to Notices to Mariners and the official nautical charts.

Adjustment of Aids to Navigation - Kattegat and Skagerrak

When the new Routing Measures in the vicinity of Skagerrak and Kattegat are being implemented on July 1 2020 the Aids to Navigation (AtoNs) system will be adjusted accordingly on both Swedish and Danish waters.

Renaming of other routes in Kattegat

The present recommended route B off the east coast of Jutland change its name to route C. The route is slightly adjusted according to the latest surveys.

DW-routes between Læsø og Anholt and east of Grenå

​At Route T two deep-water routes “Kattegat North” and “Kattegat South”, recommended for ships with a draught of 10 metres or more, are established.

Route A og B between Hanstholm and Skagen

The two recommended routes, route A and route B, off the west coast of Denmark are introduced to allow the traffic to navigate safely to and from the proposed TSS north of Skagen.

Route S outside the west coast of Sweden

Route S, the route between Precautionary area at Kummel Banke and the entrance to the Sound, is recommended for ships with a draught of 10 meters or less.

TSS off Skagen and Route T to Læsø

​Two traffic separation schemes, TSS Skagen West and TSS Skagen East with associated precautionary area and inshore traffic zone are established north of Skagen, Denmark.
